Double check tarpaulins during windy weather

PHILIPSBURG--The Fire Department has issued a special warning to residents who still have tarpaulin roofs to double check and secure the material during windy weather conditions this weekend.

St. Maarten Meteorological Department (MDS) reported on Friday that a moderate to strong breeze of 14 to 25 miles per hour with higher gusts is expected through Saturday morning along with brief passing rain showers.

A number of homes are still using tarpaulins as temporary roofs. The windy weather conditions are being caused by a tight pressure gradient associated with the strengthening Atlantic high pressure that also will cause periodic cloudiness and isolated showers across the local area, according to MDS.
