Dispute between neighbours escalates in shooting of man

UNION FARM ESTATE--A construction worker known as “Blacks” was shot in his stomach by his neighbour on Marion Evangelien de Weever Hering Drive in Union Farm Estate just after 7:00pm Tuesday.

The Daily Herald understands that there was an argument between the victim and the family of the shooter just before the incident happened. The victim was shot just outside his driveway.

Police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson told this newspaper on the scene that the shooting stemmed from a longstanding feud between the neighbours. He said the suspect had been detained and the weapon confiscated.

Henson said in a press release issued later that “an old and still ongoing feud” between the neighbours had escalated and had gotten “out of hand,” at which time one man took his rifle and shot his neighbour in his stomach.

The victim was treated on the scene by paramedics and then taken to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment. The suspect, who was still on the scene, was arrested. The crime scene was closed off and the Forensic Department collected evidence while the detectives questioned witnesses to piece together what exactly happened.

The suspect was taken to the Philipsburg police station where he remains in custody for further investigation.

Henson said information on the victim’s condition was unavailable up to press time.
