Directive to halt press mobility not from Police

PHILIPSBURG--Police Chief Carl John has confirmed to The Daily Herald the directive to halt press movement around hurricane ravaged St. Maarten did not come from him. His officers will not be instructed “to stop freedom of the press.”

John, however, does not have authority over the Royal Dutch Marines, who have been at the forefront of turning back team members of this newspaper.
Who exactly issued the order to stifle the movement of the press is not clear as well as the reason for this drastic decision.
John promised to address this limiting of freedom of the fourth estate – the press.
