Clearing the pond

The clean-up of the gut off Oyster Pond is ongoing under the supervision and collaboration of Nature Foundation and Kidz At Sea. Phase 1 of the project is clearing of debris at the border point, garbage and dead vegetation removal, shoreline clearing and an underwater survey of the pond to determine what needs to be removed with barges and heavy equipment. The work is financed by St. Maarten Timeshare Association and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from local businesses. The project will provide temporary work for some 30 unemployed persons. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the clean-up and supervision. (John Halley photo)
