ANGUILLA--Due to Hurricane Irma the conclusion of administrative matters for the 2017 boat racing season were delayed. However, the Department of Youth and Culture and the Boat Racing Association have informed all boat owners, captains and crew that cash prizes and payment will take place next week.
A release from the Department states, “We want to express our gratitude to all boat owners, captains and crew members of the various boats for their patience and their positive contributions to the execution of the 2017 season.” They are also expressing thanks to the sponsors of the various races. Total sponsorship increased from EC $79,000 in 2016 to EC $138,000 in 2017. “We are especially grateful to all our sponsors for honouring their commitments made to the Association and for their ongoing support to the development of boat racing in Anguilla,” the release states.
A number of racing boats received significant damage from Irma, and the Department of Youth and Culture and the Boat Racing Association have organised a team of boat builders to carry out detailed assessments on all the boats. On completion of the assessments a report will be compiled and the Department will lead a national, regional and international effort to raise funding to assist boat owners with the repairs/rebuilding of the vessels.
