PHILIPSBURG--The resurfacing of Back Street is progressing on schedule. The first stage, up to the alley by the Anglican Church, is now complete. The second stage, up to Angelo’s Boutique, is currently underway. The project will continue in stages until completion.
Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher symbolically “broke ground” on the Back Street project on April 24. The project, a joint effort of the Ministries of TEATT and Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI, is being financed by the TEATT Ministry and executed by main contractor Windward Roads.
The bricks were removed and the road was paved. The busy street remains open for pedestrians at all times and to emergency vehicles. VROMI has also made it possible for residents and businesses to connect sewage lines at their own expense while the project is ongoing. The drainage on the road will be regulated to eliminate water accumulation in pockets.
Barring any setbacks, this phase of the project should be completed before the end of May.
