AUC to host conf. on disaster medicine, hurricane resiliency

PHILIPSBURG--American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine, which evacuated students from its Sint Maarten campus following Hurricane Irma in 2017, will host the International Conference on Disaster Medicine and Hurricane Resiliency from March 8, to 11.

AUC said on Thursday that while no two disasters are alike, preparation and response have many similarities and are key to delivering everything from healthcare to food. These issues are set to take centre stage at the conference. Experts in disaster healthcare and emergency management will converge in Sint Maarten to share solutions and best practices when it comes to addressing healthcare issues in the midst of disasters for the forum.

“The only thing you can control in the face of a disaster is how prepared you are,” said AUC Executive Dean Heidi Chumley. “Knowing how to plan for disasters and what to expect is vital and access to healthcare services is absolutely crucial. This conference is part of our efforts to lead the way in fostering conversations and collaborations when it comes to disaster management.”

The conference is being organized by AUC in partnership with Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a physician group that includes emergency medicine experts with global disaster medicine experience.

AUC and HMFP are working together to develop the Caribbean Center for Disaster Medicine (CCDM), a centre of excellence designed to foster collaboration among professionals responsible for healthcare delivery,

disaster preparedness, emergency response and medical education, which will be based in Sint Maarten.
