Flag bearers at the Boys’ Brigade Awards.
ANGUILLA--The Anguilla Boys’ Brigade Annual Awards Ceremony, hosted by Acting Governor Perin Bradley, took place at the Governor’s residence on Friday, July 7.
The ceremony began with the three-person flag detail, eight-member percussion drum band, and Company members marching smartly onto the grounds of Government House, much to the delight and pride of assembled parents, relatives and friends. After the posting of the colours, singing of the national anthem and national song, guests were welcomed and provided with a brief history of the Boys’ Brigade.
Notably, the Anguilla Boys’ Brigade has experienced a revival, with membership now totalling more than 100 boys and officers. They participated in Anguilla’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, and have received recognition for their skilful contributions. Forty boys will participate in an upcoming International Boys’ camp in Antigua.
Awards and badges were given to members of each company for number of years served, activity completion, best-dressed uniform, and best attendance. Nicolas Carbon received the overall Best Boy award for 1st Anguilla Company, South Hill. The overall Best Boy awards for 2nd and 4th Companies will be announced at a later date. Recognized during the ceremony were six community members for their outstanding support to the Boys’ Brigade during the past year. Acting Governor Perin Bradley, in his closing remarks, noted that he too was once a Boys’ Brigade Boy, and had made life-long friends during that time. He, along with Reverend Wycherley Gumbs, congratulated all the award winners and thanked friends and family for their continued support.
The Boys’ Brigade is an interdenominational Christian youth organization built on the twin pillars of religion and discipline, focusing on service to the community, sports and physical challenges, educational exercises, social events, camps, and other activities designed to develop boys and prepare them for early adulthood rooted in discipline, self-respect and Christian manliness. The Anguilla’s Boys’ Brigade comprises three companies with three groups: cadets ages 12-17, junior cadets 8 -11 and pre-junior anchor cadets, seven years and younger.
