Allergy sufferers to take precautions for Saharan dust

AIRPORT--Persons with allergies and/or respiratory ailments are urged by the Meteorological Department to take precautions to guard against the impact of Saharan dust that is expected across the local area in the next few days.

Hazy skies and limited shower activity are forecast across St Maarten for the next several days as a result of the Saharan dust presence in the atmosphere.

The warning about the increase of sand and dust, swept up from the Sahara Desert in Africa and carried by the winds to the sprinkle down on parts of the Caribbean archipelago, is based on Dust Prediction Models.

The Met Office said in its noon forecast that the dominant Atlantic high-pressure ridge combined with increasing Saharan dust will restrict significant precipitation across the local area.

Seas will remain moderate during the next few days. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution, said the Met Office.
