55th Carnival celebration kicks off with large crowd

Carnival revellers jamming during the Opening Jump-Up of the 55th Statia Carnival celebration, on Wednesday.

  1. EUSTATIUS--The opening of the 55th celebration of Statia Carnival drew a large crowd on Wednesday, July 17.

The Opening Jump-Up started at the Mall with Jamm Boyzz Band entertaining revellers on the streets of St. Eustatius and concluded at Mike van Putten Youth Centre, which has been renamed “Carnival City” for the 2019 Carnival.

Statia Carnival Committee President Teena Lopes spoke briefly at the official opening ceremony at the entrance of Carnival City. She welcomed all revellers and visitors and wished them a “happy and safe Carnival 2019.”

Deputy Government Commissioner Mervyn Stegers also welcomed everyone to the “grand occasion” and wished them all a “joyous and safe Carnival. Come let’s party, be merry, but be safe,” he said.
