2 murder suspects surrender to police

PHILIPSBURG--The two men believed to be responsible for the shooting at El Capitan Night Club on December 31 walked into the police headquarters on Wednesday morning and surrendered to police who had been searching for them since the shooting took place.

The suspects D.J.O. and S.R. were immediately arrested and placed in custody for further investigation, according to police.

One of the shooting victims died at the hospital emergency room while the other was treated by ambulance officials.

The Daily Herald understands that the men who were shot had on bulletproof vests. According to police, when officers arrived at the establishment to investigate the situation on Old Year’s Day, they learnt that two persons had been shot and those responsible for this act had fled the scene in a black SUV headed towards Bishop Hill.

“Another police patrol located in the immediate area was informed that the vehicle was heading in their direction and that they should look out for it. At the same time another patrol headed in the direction where that suspect vehicle fled.

“During the chase, the suspect managed to escape, causing the patrol vehicles to collide head-on. As a result of this collision one officer suffered a wound to his head and the other complained of pain in her arms,” according to police on Monday.

Police are not linking the December 22 Casa Blanca shooting with this incident at this time. That shooting also resulted in the death of one victim and the other being critically injured.
