1,800 vehicles, were shipped off-island

Some 3,023 metric tonnes of crushed wrecks, accounting for some 1,800 vehicles, were shipped off-island by Steel Crushers BV on May 14. It took three days to cart all the crushed wrecks in numerous truckloads to Port St. Maarten for loading on the ship.

The ship will return from Europe in coming months for another round of removal in the Ministry of Environment and Infrastructure project to rid the country’s roadside of unsightly and unsafe car wrecks. This was the second time in recent history that metals have been exported for recycling. The first shipment was exactly one year ago. Minister of Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Miklos Giterson said his ministry’s collaboration with the Police Force on the country-wide clean-up is “progressing well.”
