Several parents surrendered their children to local authorities over the past two weeks, after allegedly committing crimes. The first case concerned an assault at the bus stop near various schools on September 2.
A video of the incident had gone viral on social media showing several students beating a youngster seated there. A parent appeared at the police station with one of the alleged culprits the next morning, followed by another couple and their son later that afternoon. A judge extended the pre-trial detention of both youths 16 and 18 years old on September 4.
The second case was a break-in at six booths inside Festival Village early Sunday. Surveillance footage of the burglary widely circulated online as well.
A parent viewing the footage recognised her son and brought him to the station that same day. On Monday other parents showed up with two more suspects and all three minors were placed in custody.
Some might say they would not give up their own no matter what. The term “unconditional love” is at times used in this regard.
Such thinking is pure foolishness. If anybody including family do bad things that are clearly wrong and anybody in their right mind should be totally against, especially where people get hurt, turning a blind eye is not the answer.
After all, if this kind of behaviour is not corrected it will likely never change. Turning them in might be the biggest favour one could grant those involved, because they must now learn to carry responsibility for their actions.
Assuming the innocence of loved ones is one thing, but too often in the past have police attempting to do their job come under attack by neighbours, relatives and friends who see themselves as “defending” suspects in question. What they are actually doing is pushing the latter ever further and deeper into a spiral of delinquency.
