Friday’s news that the forensic lab and shooting range planned at the former Soremar building in Orange Grove are yet to be realised was most disappointing. Of course, it’s very well known that there is a structural lack of funding in local law enforcement, to which one must add the pressure of having to execute the Plans of Approach agreed to with the Netherlands.
But the building was officially opened by former Justice Minister Edson Kirindongo already at the end of July last year in the presence of Governor Eugene Holiday. Perhaps fanfare at the time had something to do with the election two months later, as particularly the US Party that had nominated him sought to take credit for the project.
Mind you, it’s certainly not the only time ground has been broken, first stones placed or even ribbons cut for nothing much to happen immediately afterwards and there are usually politicians involved. Moreover, the property’s purchase alone was obviously a big step.
To be fair, Kirindongo tackled several other long-standing issues such as the backlog regarding the legal positions and accompanying benefits for police personnel as well as getting them better insurance coverage in light of the nature of their job. He also supplied the officers some much-needed materials.
Still, when high expectations are created not just once but twice with the naming of the complex, people understandably expect these to be fulfilled within a reasonable period. It’s been said before, but it might be wise in the future to hold off on celebratory activities a bit until something tangible is actually achieved.
