Failure of the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) back-up system during early Wednesday morning’s country-wide power outage (see Thursday newspaper) led to concern in the local hospitality sector. After all, it regards the lifeblood of the dominant stay-over tourism industry.
The situation was remedied after about 90 minutes, but by that time several flights were reportedly already delayed. Airlines abroad might understandably be hesitant to depart while unsure a destination will be open when landing.
The government-owned company said the cause appeared to be one of its new generators, as all three must operate simultaneously to provide an adequate supply. Relevant investments were made after persistent electricity problems at the island’s main gateway during the summer of 2021.
That another energy-related service interruption took place three years later doesn’t necessarily mean anybody did something wrong. Where machines are involved, breakdowns can happen even with the best of maintenance.
It nevertheless behoves management to determine exactly what led to the malfunction and – more importantly – take steps to help prevent a reoccurrence in the near future, preferably before the reopening of the completed reconstructed terminal scheduled for October 8.
Nothing may be perfect, but there is always room for improvement.
