It was interesting to read about the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI calling on garages to stop using public roads for vehicle repair and storage (see Monday newspaper). One only need frequent certain districts to see the problem is significant.
The cars block side-walks and can form a traffic safety hazard. Community Police Officers (CPOs) will be visiting those responsible to set a deadline for removing them.
Some may question what these auto repair shops are doing in residential areas in the first place, but that is a consequence of largely uncontrolled development and lack of zoning. Many also lack any hindrance permit or even a business licence to operate.
KPSM and VROMI said garages operating without proper authorisation or conducting repairs on public streets will be required to cease operations immediately.
Keep in mind, small neighbourhood garages – whether “under the tree” or not – do offer an alternative to motorists who may feel unable to afford bigger garages. They also provide some employment especially among lower income groups.
Then again, making use of such services entails considerable risk, so people are advised to only visit trusted mechanics and bodyworkers for example at reputable local car dealerships. Cheaper is not always less costly.
