More equal than others

More equal than others

Member of Parliament (MP) for Nation Opportunity Wealth (NOW) Lyndon Lewis wants a “Very Important Person (VIP) fee” targetting yachts and private jet companies (see Friday/Saturday edition) seeking fast-track services and clearance for their vessels. The levy is to boost government income.

At first glance this seems like a good way to strengthen public finances without burdening residents. After all, those involved can probably afford it.

One must nevertheless keep in mind that catering to the rich too is a competitive business. Nearby alternatives with comparable facilities including large enough airports and adequate marinas like Antigua exist.

Some even question the use of such tourism, arguing that many of the owners merely fly here to get on their vessels and head for other destinations such as St. Barths and Anguilla. That’s not an accurate picture, however, as most spend time on “The Friendly Island” not in the last place because of its attractions, available activities, dining and nightlife.

Besides, crews for both planes and yachts stay longer and also contribute significantly to the local economy, not to mention all kinds of providers who supply them with whatever they need.

One factor to consider is possible implications of “fast-track services” for adhering to existing regulations. For example, normal Immigration and Customs checks cannot be circumvented or minimised just because arriving passengers are well-off, as they too could be a risk to the country.

Especially as a former Justice Minister, the opposition member will no doubt appreciate that and want rules to always be properly enforced, regardless of the money aspect. There is a saying that “some are more equal than others” but at the end of the day it should be law for one, law for all.
