Enough reason

Thanksgiving is one of those American traditions people like to celebrate locally as well. Observed on the last Thursday in November, the US holiday also signals the nearing end of the annual Atlantic hurricane season and although Hurricane Otto is still influencing the weather in the Southwestern part of the Caribbean, it appears this island was again spared any major storm-hit this year.

In addition, St. Maarten held free, fair and peaceful elections that went largely without incident. Sure, there has since been a bit of confusion in forming a new government coalition following the result, as is often the case, but the democratic process itself, including a full recount of the votes, took place in a civilised and orderly manner.

The cruise industry has seen some decline after decades of growth, but the latest reports are that this negative trend will again be reversed in the near future. When it comes to stay-over guests travel experts have indicated promising winter bookings and the yachting sector too is said to be holding its own.

Moreover, investments in visitor accommodations and attractions continue to be made, demonstrating sustained confidence in the destination and its tourism product that provides the livelihood for practically all inhabitants. While many things such as garbage processing and utilities obviously require improvement, making that happen would only become more difficult without a strong economy.

Indeed, there is enough reason to be thankful.
