Many of our readers may have gone through the humiliating experience of having their car stolen. It is a feeling of helplessness, but above all, sheer rage. So when they read the story in today’s paper of the lady who got her car back within 24 hours by cornering the car thief on a public road in Madame Estate, their immediate reaction is likely to be: good for her!
But this story could have had a far more dramatic ending. Gun possession among the criminal community on our island has become a serious concern. And these guns are more often than not carried in public, whether concealed inside the carrying compartment of a scooter or under the seat of a car.
While we understand the frustration of having to wait on often times slow-moving justice authorities, who in general have more important issues to focus on than common car theft, we would counsel restraint against taking the law into your own hands. After all, all risk insurance generally covers car theft. You can buy a new car, but not a life!
