The situation at Leonald Conner School (see related story) deserves the immediate attention of local environmental and health care authorities. No parent likes their children to be missing classes, but the safety and wellbeing of both pupils and staff are paramount.
Minister Silveria Jacobs says she’s working with the Health Department and Public Education Director Glenderlin Davis-Holiday to place ACs in all classrooms and limit any exposure, but that’s obviously not the entire solution. After all, pupils and teachers still have to go outside, certainly during the break, never mind the rest of the area, including possibly vulnerable residents.
The source of the smelly emissions must be located as soon as possible. While the GEBE power plant and/or fuel operations in Cay Bay seem like obvious culprits, establishing the exact cause and nature of the air pollution is important to be able to tackle the problem.
Power-washing the school and providing mouth-caps for everyone would at least help the learning process there to continue for now, but a more comprehensive approach to deal with the issue is obviously needed.
