Videos of Wednesday evening’s fatal stabbing of a man in the Ebenezer area (see related story) went viral soon after. This was no doubt very shocking to the victim’s family and friends.
Some wondered how anybody could record such a violent incident and just put it online, but that has become the heartless nature of many in modern society. Sensationalism is prevalent and with today’s electronic devices easily spread.
Others asked why persons making the recording did not attempt to help, but physically intervening in altercations is not without risk. Also keep in mind that those involved would not have known the final tragic outcome.
To a certain extent they did law enforcement a favour, because their footage will no doubt be used for possible prosecution. It was also viewed by police prior to making related arrests.
Unfortunately, such questionable practices start at a young age, with students recording and sharing school fights. It would be much better for everyone if these were sent directly to authorities rather than posted, but that is rarely the case.
This behaviour remains difficult to control because social media are accessible to all, and one can even go live. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of decency.
