Today is International Day of Older Persons (see related story). Collective Prevention Service (CPS) used the occasion to encourage recognition for the valuable contribution of seniors while promoting healthy ageing, independence, dignity and inclusion.
This year’s theme is: “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.” It acknowledges the ageing population around the world that requires communities to adapt. In fact, this process is creating considerable pressure on funds managed by Social and Health Insurances SZV.
Apart from longevity, are the elderly treated well? It depends on who you talk to, but things certainly haven’t become easier for many.
The old age pension provision AOV is far below a liveable wage especially for those who didn’t legally reside in St. Maarten their entire adult life and get less than the full amount. What’s more, consumer prices have been rising and it seems the applied indexation does not suffice.
But there are also other issues to consider. Banks for example, took away the old savings books as well as cheques, while account statements no longer come in the mail and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) don’t provide them any more either.
Government and other businesses too are increasingly forcing people to go online.
Of course, everyone should learn to do so, but it may take older folks a little longer and they could often use some help.
Show some understanding and most importantly a bit of patience.
