The Freegan Foundation conjured up a thrillifying Saturday morning for musical fans decked out in green and pink, for the birthday celebration of co-founder and managing director DJ Jansen de Jong. This has been the fifth annual movie-viewing birthday party, open to the community at large and completely free of charge, including drinks and snacks. This year’s event saw the biggest ever turnout, with 101 guests enjoying the hit musical fantasy film – “Wicked: For Good”.
The act of generosity and joy was pulled off this year despite the fact that the foundation is facing serious financial difficulty which is threatening the continuity of its programmes. The recent, sudden loss of a major sponsor has left the foundation reeling and on shaky ground. On that note, an entertaining fundraising event featuring Orange Grove will be held on Saturday, December 6, at Seaview Beach Hotel on the Boardwalk.
The foundation is issuing a heartfelt call to action for support, so that it can in turn keep supporting those in dire need. Its mission is to reduce food insecurity, running a client-choice grocery programme that supports hundreds of households every month. The foundation also runs a thrift store and offers personal coaching and skills training designed to foster independence and long-term stability. It came to be when DJ and his husband Joost de Jong Jansen founded the organisation in the devastating wake of Hurricane Irma in 2017. It has been going strong ever since, and is often voted as a top three non-profit organisation on the island in The Daily Herald’s yearly “Best Of” survey by the public.
Saturday’s birthday bonanza was a hit, and made possible through donations by friends and family that love supporting the foundation because of what they do. Although there was a backdrop of uncertainty, the whimsical event was full of joy and appreciation. DJ was definitely showered with love on his special day.
With everyone encouraged to swankify for the occasion, prizes were on offer for best-dressed and – instead of individuals – two families won the top two prizes of gift vouchers for the thrift store and weekly meals. The Violenus family of four donned hunter green outfits with gold detailing and a few magical touches; while Ronald Duikersloot, Laurien Reinders and their young daughter wore spellbinding costumes. DJ himself wore an explosion of colours and fun accessories. Between the fun costumes, playful atmosphere and the movie’s epic vocals and stunning visuals, it’s safe to say the crowd was left goosified.
The upcoming fundraising event takes place from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Seaview Beach Hotel, and is sure to be a night of good vibes, rhythm and energy. It will feature live music by Orange Grove, Jack & Jams drink specials, raffle prizes from generous local businesses, an auction featuring a one-of-a-kind painting revealed at the event, and a feel-good afternoon supporting a meaningful cause.
Guests can also elevate their experience by reserving a private cabana overlooking the stage. Call 542-2323 (phone) or +17215842323 (WhatsApp) to book a cabana.
