The heart behind this year’s Christmas Angels program

From Chiaira Bowers

On Wednesday, November 26, the Christmas Angels program officially opens under the RISE Foundation. As the decorated trees go up across the island, it’s important to remember that every angel represents someone in our community – a child or teenager; a differently-abled youth or adult; a senior, or an individual navigating mental health challenges – from any one of 13 organizations and schools. Each one is a real person hoping for a brighter Christmas.

During visits this week with several of our participating organizations, we were reminded of the heart behind this program.

At Marie G. de Weever Primary School, one student proudly held up his angel and said, “I liked when I was colouring the angel, and I hope someone picks me so that I can be supported.” His voice carried so much care, and you could really feel his hope of being seen and supported by the community.

At the 721 Kids Foundation, another student explained their creative process with enthusiasm: “We used toilet paper, put it in water, froze it, coloured it, and added strings and eyes. We made these angels for you. We hope you appreciate it, and I hope you buy our gift. God bless your heart.”

And at the Mental Health Foundation, Valencia Chambers-Hixon shared how meaningful the project has been for her clients. “These beautiful angels were created by our clients with so much love, creativity and emphasis. This promotes inclusion, raises awareness, and gives them hope, knowing the community is involved in something they made. It brings more meaningfulness and joy for Christmas.”

Where to find Christmas angels

From Thursday, November 27, to Monday, December 1, Christmas angels will be on location at the Government Building in Philipsburg, Cost U Less, and Super City.

Self-service trees open from November 26 to December 8 at TelEm (both locations), La Sucrière, and Princess Juliana International Airport.

With more than 500 angels waiting, we invite the community to spread the word, come with family and friends, and help make this season brighter for every person represented on the trees.
