OPEN HOUSE SAILING SCHOOL

OPEN HOUSE SAILING SCHOOL

On Saturday, August 15, from 10:00am till 4:00pm, St. Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) will be hosting an open house for everyone. Bring your grands, your kids, your parents, your family and your friends and enjoy free try-out lessons, rope work lessons, nautical flags, the phonetic alphabet and more.

The fleet of boats currently consists of Optimists (Opti), Lasers, RS Quests and Laser Picos. The Opti, a worldwide competitive boat, is ideal for youth to learn how to sail. Opti champions have gone on to become advanced sailors in all types of boats.

The Laser Pico is the perfect beginner boat; either for two younger kids together or one teenager/smaller adult. The Pico is very easy to rig and sail, which makes it perfect for beginners or those on their way to the Laser or RS Vision. Once you know the boat a bit better, it’s also a great boat to start your racing career in!

The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. Not meant for unqualified sailors due to the high level of skill needed to sail them, they are popular with the advanced children in the program and with members of the club.

The RS Quest is the perfect all-round family sailboat. It’s easy to handle and a great training boat for lessons, as well as for cruising and racing. After children age out of the Opti program, the next step for them is often a double-hander. This boat is ideal for the older youth who are new to sailing.

You can expect to see a St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and a SMYC information booth for all your questions: from becoming a member to maybe you wanting to buy some merchandise. Just remember to wear your mask and keep a safe social distance.

If you don’t know where SMYC is located, just head toward the direction of the Simpson Bay Bridge and you’ll find SMYC right next to it on 90 Welfare Road, Cole Bay. Come out and celebrate the start of a new season together with SMYC!
