Authors: Bamba and Delroy Daley of the AUC School of Medicine

Hey friends! It’s Bamba here! School is back and that means it’s time to prepare to learn! Making sure that we eat the right foods is the best way to get your brain ready to win the day! Now let’s look into what it takes to keep our brains and minds super strong!

Did you know that the main source of brain food is glucose?

The brain is a picky eater – kinda like my baby cousin…haha! So, what is glucose? Glucose is a tiny sugar that the brain uses as fuel after our bodies break down the foods we eat. Some of the BEST sources of glucose sugars are fruits like apples; vegetables like sweet potatoes; and cereal. YUM!

What about sugar from candy?

Eating too much sugar from candy or sweets can lead to tummy aches and low energy – which is not good!

Did you know that your brain loves to exercise?

You guys are so smart that you didn’t notice that you are working your brain out right now! As you read, count, and work through problems, your brain gets stronger by building new connections. These connections help you to do more work in less time.

Did you know that your brain loves protein too?

Your brain likes more than just glucose (sugar) and it needs different kinds of foods to help make it the strongest and fastest it can be!

Here are some foods you can eat to get a stronger and healthier brain:

  • Eggs are packed with protein that helps the brain build new connections.
  • Yogurt has special fats to help brain cells keep in good shape to send information through your body.
  • Green vegetables have vitamins that help with your memory. We need our memory to help ace our tests!
  • Fish is a good source of vitamin D and special fats that help your memory too!
  • Nuts and seeds are also a good source of protein, special fats, and minerals that can help boost your mood to feel happy and energetic.
  • Oatmeal is packed with fibre that helps keep your brain and heart’s arteries clear to pump blood easily!

Wow! I didn’t know learning about brain food would get me so hungry. Now that you know about many superfoods to keep your brain strong and healthy, I know you’ll get straight A’s in school this year!

Until next time friends! – Bamba out!
