‘Money Week’ comes to the classroom

Primary schools across St. Maarten are getting special visits this week, as part of an educational project launched by the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS). “Money Week” is all about making kids aware of the value of money, saving, and making good financial choices.

This is the first edition of Money Week in St. Maarten, and the same project has also launched in Curaçao. There are also plans to host Money Week in 2027 and 2028. Kids had an interactive lesson about money with teachers and guest lecturers and got to know our new currency – the Caribbean guilder – better.

Cash boxes were brought to the classrooms, containing play-money, both notes and coins. The play-money can be used to bring math lessons to life.

In St. Maarten, the project was launched at Oranje Primary School, and all the other primary schools will have taken part by the end of the week.

CBCS interim director Dwayne President and Education Minister Melissa Gumbs gave a guest lecture to the pupils of group 5 at the Oranje Primary School, marking the very first lesson in Money Week. For pupils of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Primary School, the lecture was given by Finance Minister Marinka Gumbs and CBCS employee Ghyslaine Rollocks-Petrona.

The lectures were fun and interactive. Has your school been visited yet? What is something that you learned?
