Health Seat interview with Jessenia Lazaro

Jessenia Lazaro has been selected as one of the MCs who will be hosting the upcoming Grand Legend Gala on December 7 at JW Marriott Beach Resort & Spa in Dawn Beach.

How does it feel to be hosting such a high-profile event on your home island?

Thank you! It’s truly an honour. Being on home-soil makes it even more special. Sint Maarten has given me so much, and to be part of an event that celebrates legends in our community is deeply meaningful. I feel both excited and humbled by the responsibility.

As a former beauty pageant winner, how has your pageant journey shaped who you are today?

My pageant journey has taught me more than just how to walk in heels. It taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of being authentic. Public speaking, especially during Q&A portions, forced me to think on my feet and be clear about my values. That confidence carries over into every part of my life now.

What inspired you to transition from competing in pageants to taking on the role of MC?

I’ve always loved being on stage, but as I grew in my career, I realized I wanted to contribute in a broader way – not just as a contestant, but as a facilitator. When I was approached to MC, I saw it as a way to use my skills to uplift others, guide the evening, and make sure everything flows smoothly. The defining moment was actually when I volunteered at a small local event – I loved how bringing warmth and energy could create a memorable experience for everyone.

Can you tell us a little about what the audience can expect at the Grand Legend Gala?

Absolutely! The Gala will be a night of elegance and celebration. We’re anticipating a very diverse audience that includes community leaders, artists, philanthropists, and business innovators. There will be performances, award presentations, and opportunities to highlight local legends, who have made an impact. It’s not just a party; it’s a tribute to legacy and excellence!

Aside from your role as MC, are you involved in any other aspects of the planning of the Grand Legend Gala?

Yes, I’ve been involved in meetings with the organizing committee, especially around the flow of the program working with Jeffrey Richardson. I’ve also helped brainstorm ideas for how to weave in meaningful storytelling about the legends being honoured, so that the audience really understands not just what they’ve done, but why their contributions matter, and why we have to “give them flowers now” – it’s about celebrating the people of today that contribute to our rich community today!

In your personal life, what practices do you follow to stay healthy, both physically and mentally?

For me, balance is key. Physically, I try to stay active always – whether it’s yoga, running, or strength training. Nutrition matters, so I focus on whole foods and hydrate a lot. But just as important is mental health: I meditate, journal, and make time for reflection. Beauty is more than skin deep, and I believe health is the foundation of feeling beautiful.

What causes or messages are you particularly passionate about, and will you be highlighting them during the event or in your future work?

Well, I care deeply about youth empowerment and self-esteem. Growing up, I saw how pageants can transform one’s confidence, so I want to give back by mentoring young women and supporting programs that teach leadership skills. At the Gala, I hope to encourage attendees to invest in youth-led initiatives. Moving forward, I plan to one day start a mentorship program that combines beauty, wellness, and personal development.

What are some of the challenges you anticipate for the Gala, and how do you plan to navigate them?

One challenge is keeping the energy high throughout the evening. With so many moving parts, it’s easy for momentum to dip. To combat that, I’m working closely with the production team to ensure smooth transitions and engaging content. Another challenge is making sure that the tribute portion doesn’t feel too formal or staged; I want it to feel heartfelt and genuine, not just ceremonial.

Especially in the context of this “Grand Legend” Gala, what does legacy mean to you, and how do you hope to contribute to or build a legacy for others?

Legacy, to me, is about impact that outlives us – the positive change we inspire, the people we uplift, the example we set. In the context of this Gala, honouring legends isn’t just about celebrating the past; it’s about inspiring the future. I hope that my role helps shine a light on those who’ve given so much, and encourages others to ask: “How will I leave my mark?” I want to be part of building a legacy of service, passion, and community.

Finally, when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams, what advice would you give to young people, particularly young women in Sint Maarten-Saint Martin, who look up to beauty queens or public figures?

Believe in yourself, even when it’s hard. Your voice matters; your story matters. Work hard; prepare; don’t be afraid; and be bold. Use every opportunity, such as pageants, public speaking, and community work, not just for personal gain, but to lift others around you up. And, most importantly, stay true to who you are. Authenticity is your greatest strength. The best views are seen after the hardest climbs; don’t forget to smile at life.
