Team St. Maarten to be honoured at Tae kwon do championship

MIDDLE REGION—St. Maarten’s King Yen Tae kwon do School will be honoured at the 23rd Puerto Rico International Tae kwon do Open Championship in Puerto Rico in March.


Under the guidance of Grandmaster Theo Liu the school has sent teams to the competition to represent the Friendly Island for years. Each year the team has returned home with medals and trophies.
This year the squad will consists of 25 selected athletes, ranging in age 6 to 50 years together with four team officials and supported by 20 parents.
“Our excellent international tournament accomplishments in the past years have been recognised and earned St. Maarten the Outstanding International Team Award, “said Grandmaster Liu.
Expected to field teams this year are Venezuela, Dominican Republic, United Sates, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, Mexico, Martinique, Jamaica, Surinam, Curacao, Aruba, St. Thomas, Barbados and host Puerto Rico.
“We want to give our St. Maarten student athletes again the great opportunity to acquire international experience in a one of kind event where only the best athletes meet,” said Liu.
The competition is scheduled for March 12 and 13 at Arquelio Tores Coliseum in San German, Puerto Rico.
“Once again we will make St. Maarten proud. Our athletes will travel in special sports outfits with SXM printed on the back, said the Grandmaster. He continued,” The St. Maarten song will be played and our flag will fly as usual in the stadium next to those of the big countries.”
