William questions logic of launching registration drive on Election Day

William Marlin

PHILIPSBURG--Former Prime Minister William Marlin says the move by Government to launch something as important as the National Employment Registration Drive this coming Monday, the day of the snap parliamentary election, seems untimely, illogical and a distraction.

Marlin said in a press release on Thursday that the registration drive is important, but so is residents exercising their constitutional right to vote in the upcoming snap parliamentary election and another more appropriate day should have been chosen to launch the programme.

Many persons would be caught up in the election and in casting their ballot on the same day that this is scheduled to be held. The Drive will be held at the Government Administration Building and is aimed at registering job seekers for employment and/or training opportunities. The drive is open to Dutch nationals, permanent residents and temporary residents.

Marlin urged all job seekers to use one of the remaining days to sign up for the initiative so that they can still have an opportunity to be part of the Drive, but said Government should have used more discretion when choosing a launch date as an entire day would be lost by holding it on Monday, when many people would be going to the polls to vote.
