Stamp series on traditional attire

Newly issued

WILLEMSTAD--Cpost International has released a new series of postage stamps themed around the traditional attire of Curaçao. Designed by Andre van Hoop, the series highlights the island’s cultural richness and history.

The traditional clothing depicted reflects a blend of African traditions and European influences, adapted to Curaçao’s tropical climate.

Traditional women’s attire is characterised by colourful, full skirts and embellished tops. The “lensu” – a cloth traditionally worn around the head – also plays a significant role; beyond providing protection from the sun, it historically held social and expressive significance.

As for men’s attire, the series features the traditional “cabana” hat, which was hand-woven and served as protection against the intense sun. Also included are handmade sandals, known as “chani” (or “hak” – shoes), which are an integral part of this traditional dress
