PUBLIC WEATHER FORECAST FOR ST. MAARTEN

This afternoon through Thursday midday: Partly cloudy and breezy with a few local showers possible.

SURFACE WINDS:  This afternoon through Thursday midday: Easterly with a moderate to fresh breeze of 13 to 19 mph and higher possible gusts.   

    

SYNOPSIS:     

Lingering moisture from a recent tropical wave may cause brief local showers during the early part of this forecast period. A relatively drier air mass is settling over the local region and will restrict precipitation for the next couple of days.  

Moderate seas with waves peaking at 7 feet are expected through the next few days.    

   

STATE OF THE SEA:  Moderate        WAVES/SWELLS: 5 to 7 feet   

    

SPECIAL FEATURE:   

At 11:00 am, Tropical Depression 11 was located about 1320 miles east-southeast of St. Maarten. The depression is moving toward the west near 15 mph. This track is forecast to take this system north of St. Maarten.  

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today.  

 

THE METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT OF ST. MAARTEN WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS SYSTEM AND UPDATE THE PUBLIC.  

   

OUTLOOK through Friday midday: Partly cloudy and breezy with isolated showers possible.
