POINTE BLANCHE--Construction of the new Point Blanche Prison has officially begun, marking another step in the Detention Sector Reform Programme, Justice Minister Nathalie Tackling shared on Wednesday.

Speaking during the live Council of Ministers press briefing, Tackling said the contractor is currently completing the site camp, which will include site offices and new parking facilities for staff and visitors.

She explained that the initial phase is a standard and critical part of large-scale infrastructure projects, ensuring that all systems, resources and safeguards are in place before full construction begins.

According to the minister, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) continues to actively manage progress in close coordination with its partners while focusing on delivery efficiency and maintaining quality, safety and oversight standards.

Based on the contractor's programme, demolition of an existing warehouse within the prison is scheduled to begin this week, followed by the clearing of vegetation north of the construction site.

Tackling said additional updates will be provided as the project reaches new milestones.
