Megaplex food outlets reopen

COLE BAY--The Inspectorate of Public Health on Saturday reopened the two food facilities in Caribbean Cinemas Megaplex Theatres after the establishment passed its re-inspection.

Health Inspector General Dr. Earl Best as well as a representative of Caribbean Cinemas head office in Puerto Rico confirmed the reopening of the concession stand and the Cinema Deli and Café in Megaplex.

Best said too that the issues in the women’s bathroom have been rectified and the section of the men’s bathroom that is being worked on has been closed off.

The two food facilities were closed after an inspection around 8:30pm on Thursday. The Cinema’s movie presentations continued uninterrupted during the closure.

Best had said last week that the concession stand and the deli were shut down after inspectors found infestation of pests such as cockroaches, dirty filters, staff not having food handlers’ certificates as is required by law and leakage in the storage area amongst other things.

The men’s and women’s bathrooms in the facility were found in what Best had described as a deplorable state during the inspection. He said there were inoperable faucets, tiles being out of place and a general deplorable condition of the bathroom. The Inspectorate said it had been receiving complaints from the public about the bathrooms and other concerns about the facility.

In the meantime, Best said the inspectorate has a zero tolerance policy this year and will be visiting establishments for inspections on all parts of the island including in Philipsburg. He said there are only four persons on the team. Additionally, the team does some of its inspections based on complaints received from the public and/or based on issues such as food poisoning complaints.
