PHILIPSBURG--The Prosecutor’s Office has appointed Martin van Nes as new Prosecutor in St. Maarten. Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Karola van Nie confirmed his arrival as per October 1.
Van Nes will replace the organisation’s former spokesperson Prosecutor Tineke Kamps, who returned to the Netherlands as per August 1 on the conclusion of her three-year contract with the Prosecutor’s Office in St Maarten.
Van Nes currently is working for the Dutch Prosecutor’s Office in the East Netherlands district. Chief Prosecutor Ton Maan, who started his job in St. Maarten on January 1, 2015, had been working for the same organisation.
The Prosecutor’s Office in the East Netherlands region employs some 500 people and is attached to the district court in the city of Arnhem on the banks of the River Rhine. The court serves the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel, which include 81 municipalities with 3.1 million inhabitants and an area of 8,552 square kilometres.
The Prosecutor’s Office in East Netherlands is not only responsible for the regular prosecution of crime suspects, but also performs several special national duties, such as the prosecution of military suspects.
In addition, the office leads the national agency that provides information about the detention of suspects to victims of serious crimes and to the bereaved.
