POINT BLANCHE--The Marine detachment on St. Maarten assisted local authorities on Wednesday in conducting a contraband search at the Point Blanche Correctional Facility, during which drugs and several weapons were discovered.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the operation was carried out at the request of local authorities, with the Marines working alongside the Police Force of St. Maarten (KPSM). The search resulted in the discovery of drugs as well as various weapons, including bladed and impact weapons.

Authorities said the operation was conducted to ensure the search was carried out safely, orderly and effectively. The Marines also assisted in maintaining the safety of both staff and inmates throughout the operation. The Ministry of Defence noted that providing support to civil authorities is one of its three core tasks in the Caribbean region and said the cooperation between Defence and KPSM contributes to maintaining a safe and stable environment within the Kingdom.
