Man dies after choking on chicken bone Saturday

COLE BAY--Ambulance personnel were called on Saturday afternoon by several persons in front of Pineapple Pete to assist with a man who seemed to be choking. A witness who was having dinner at the restaurant at the same time told The Daily Herald that the man had hit a parked car while gasping for air.
There were two off-duty police officers also at the restaurant and they quickly tried to assist the man by performing CPR. Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene shortly after and took over CPR treatment, but the man was already showing no signs of life.
The on-call physician was called to the scene and pronounced the man dead. Paramedics were able to retrieve the object that was blocking his windpipe and saw that it was a full chicken drumstick.
Police are trying to identify the man, who had no identification on him. One of the witnesses told this newspaper the man is well known to the Cole Bay district.
