Keeping kiting alive

Kite season is in full flight on St. Eustatius signalling that Easter is drawing near. Many Statians have lamented that cultural activities such as kite flying have gone dormant with retirement or death of elders. Striving to keep the kite-making art alive is Leroy “Bandigo” Parish. He is giving youngsters first-hand knowledge of kite making, kite hoisting and a history of the different types of kites. He is also giving flying lessons as there is an art hoisting a kite and bringing it back safely to the ground. Sonny Cranston Sports Park is a favourite spot for kite flyers and admirers.
