SIMPSON BAY--The Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT) is moving forward with procurement of a dedicated ice-making machine for the Simpson Bay Fish Market to improve the handling and preservation of locally caught fish.
TEATT Minister Grisha Heyliger-Marten said Wednesday that the machine will produce flaked and shaved ice specifically for registered local fishers.
The type of ice is suited to surrounding freshly caught fish and maintaining the proper temperature during transportation and storage.
Heyliger-Marten said proper cold-chain management affects food safety, quality, shelf life and the value of the fish brought to market. “Proper cold-chain management directly affects food safety, quality, shelf life,” she said.
She encouraged fishermen and fisherwomen who have not yet registered to do so through the ETT Department, through Wendy Jack.
The minister said the objective is to continue putting the building blocks in place for fisheries to develop from an activity into a stronger, more organized and sustainable economic sector.
