Getaway car in murder found

MIDDLE REGION--The car belonging to the shooters who gunned down Roberto Gumbs last week Tuesday was found by detectives this past weekend, according to sources close to the investigation.

The vehicle was found in bad condition in Dutch Quarter near the projects. The car was burned, making it difficult for detectives to retrieve evidence in the case.

Gumbs was shot in the head several times next to his home in front of a local grocery store near Gumbs Drive close to 9:00pm.

Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Karola van Nie confirmed that a car had been found shortly after the shooting incident, but refused to go into details as the investigation is ongoing. According to eyewitnesses, after several shots were heard a blue Hyundai I20 drove off at high speed from the scene. Nine shell casings were found in the area.

It is also known that Gumbs came out of prison recently and had had several run-ins with the law in the past. He is well known in the Middle Region community and family members are working on the funeral arrangements.

Police have intensified patrols for the areas in efforts to lessen criminal activity in St. Maarten.
