French-side carnival kicks off on Friday

MARIGOT--The 2016 French-side carnival will be officially launched this coming Friday, January 22, at 7:00pm, on Marigot waterfront with speeches and a concert, the carnival committee reminded.

The concert will feature performances by Deejay VYBZ, the Riddim Master, Gunslingers Steel Band, Ebony Empress, the Legendary Timo and Youth Waves Band. Special appearances will be made by the Miss Pitchounette and Miss Junior Pageant contestants.

The first event on the carnival schedule is the Miss Pitchounette and Junior pageants that will be held on Sunday, January 24, at 4:00pm, in the Carnival Village, Galis Bay.

Five contestants are entered for each pageant and they are representing the schools on the French side. This year the after school programme has collaborated with the carnival committee to choose the contestants who range from ages six to 11 years old.

Tickets for the show are US $10 in advance or US $15 at the gate. Children under 10 years US $5. Tickets can be obtained from the Levis store on Rue de la République, Marigot.

The following Sunday, January 31, is the Children’s Parade on the theme “Tropical Forest.” Some 13 troupes are confirmed for the parade which will start at 2:00pm from the Louis Vanterpool Stadium and after a circuit of Marigot will finish at the starting point around 6:00pm.
