Efforts to make Bonaire more wheelchair friendly

Special ramp at Flamingo Airport.

BONAIRE--With the addition of a passenger boarding ramp Bonaire International Airport (BIA) has become more wheelchair friendly. It involves a mobile structure on which wheelchair-bound travellers can get in and out of a plane much easier.

This is the result of the “Accessible Tourism Bonaire” conference held on October 18, 2013 by the former Workgroup Physical Accessibility Bonaire. On the initiative of BIA and partners within the group they lobbied for such a provision on the island.

The other entities involved were organisation for persons with reduced mobility MiVaBo, vision and hearing care foundation FKBO, local care institute “Fundashon Mariadal” and the Directorate Community and Care.

Last year things started moving quickly when the Public Entity’s government, the National Representative and health insurance office Caribbean Netherlands ZVK met to consider the various possibilities. In a joint effort they were able to purchase the necessary equipment.
