Student Interns and BOPP coordinator Faye Arnell

PHILIPSBURG--Two students, who are interning at the Department of Communications (DCOMM) under the Business Outreach Placement Programme (BOPP), hosted the “Inside Government” television programme, which will be aired on St. Maarten Cable TV over the next three weeks. The students are Julianne Robert (16) and Omari Philips (18). Robert is a Charlotte Brookson Academy (CBA) of the Performance Arts student, while Philips attends Preparatory Secondary Vocational Education (PSVE) section of St. Maarten Academy.

The interns were trained in several areas at DCOMM, including administrative tasks, video production and media communication. They worked alongside DCOMM staffers to produce the programme.

The interns interviewed Prime Minister William Marlin, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs ECYS Silveria Jacobs, BOPP coordinator Faye Arnell and a few other BOPP student interns.

The students said interning at DCOMM was a learning experience. “I enjoyed working at DCOMM. I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun,” Philips said. Robert echoed similar sentiments.

The interview conducted by the students can be seen on St. Maarten Cable TV, Channel 115 at 7:00pm on August 11, August 18 and August 25.

The two interns are amongst more than 50 students who participated in the BOPP programme, which is coordinated by the Department of Social Cultural Development. Exam and pre-exam students of the secondary schools, and tertiary education students are placed in four-week summer jobs in July and August under the BOPP programme.

The Social Cultural Department said BOPP enables “highly-motivated students” to gain “invaluable work experience” in government departments or local businesses during the summer vacation.
