Blaze threatens homes

A backhoe driver dumps soil onto burning bushes in Belle Plaine on Thursday afternoon after a brush fire broke out around 3:30pm on an area of flat land close to the border.

The Fire Brigade (Pompiers) responded, but for unknown reasons had to leave, reportedly because of insufficient water, to bring another truck, leaving the backhoe and three Gendarmes to contain the fire. The fire truck returned and the fire was extinguished by about 4:30pm. The fire came close to some apartments close to the border, but a concrete wall around the property gave them some protection.
