MARIGOT--Twenty-two persons from the French side recently received certificates upon completing a course covering job training, customer service, language skills and health and wellness. The four-month, cross-border course was carried out the University of St. Martin (USM) School of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (SCELL) in collaboration with Observatoire and Polé Emploi.
The Job Training/Preparation section was facilitated by Observatoire and USM SCELL courses Multi Lingual Appreciation (MLA) facilitated by Dorothy Richardson and Thijn Laurensse, Health and Wellness by Brunilda Illidge and Customer Service by Dorothy Richardson.
SCELL Director Eion Maison encouraged graduates at the certificate ceremony on Friday “to be persistent and manage their impulsivity.”
Of the course, he said: “We are training critical minds to appreciate and operate within a universal culture that includes science and technology, and Caribbean values.”
USM Board President Valerie Giterson-Pantophlet charged graduates via a written message “to be innovative and build the society.”
Graduates look forward to their next step in life – some want to pursue a nursing career while others will seek employment in the hospitality sector.
Class projects such as identifying transferrable skill sets, job interview, survey and designing a boutique hotel gave participants the motivation to be social entrepreneurs who would go on to establish non-profit organizations to fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues.
USM and SCELL intend to continue to promote academic tourism through cooperation and cross-border projects. USM’s agreement with the Observatoire is in line with its mission to offer quality career and academic education that will provide students with a solid foundation to enter the field of their chosen profession or to further academic studies.
