Commitment versus feelings

Dear Editor,

Many people confuse love as a feeling instead of a commitment. God is love. Feelings come and go. But how does God define love in the bible?

In the bible Love is defined as patient and kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. Love never ends. Jesus in turn demonstrated his love to the Father through his submission and obedience. And without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. To be fully committed, Jesus has to be first! Absolutely first!

God said, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.” Up to now, the bible didn’t say anything about God’s love is a feeling and He is attracted to looks or the color of skin.

Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men or women who submit to or perform homosexual acts.

It is clear sex (good feeling of intercourse between man and woman) is not love but an act of the feeling of the flesh. It is considered love when both man and woman are committed and being loyal to each other and are blessed by God.

And that is why most marriage presently is failing, people are attracted to what they see or feel. But feelings go and the older we get beauty also goes. What is left is still the real person who is either committed or not.

In reality, most people fall in love with an image but not the qualities of a person which is the character. In other words, trying to love a partner without using God’s way is deceiving yourself. God and Satan know us better than ourselves.

Satan knows the flesh is weak and what the eyes see can be seducing. Satan advocates looks and for you to please yourself, which will lead to our own destruction.

God advocates deny self and please God because it will bring you real joy into eternity.

And that is the war of the soul. The war of the soul is a personal war, it is to please yourself (which Satan wants you to do) or it is to please God which God gives you that free will or choice to do. The conclusion is if your love is based on feelings you are following the wide road of destruction. If your love is on a commitment you are following the righteous narrow road that few will find that leads to everlasting joy.

Choices have consequences, choose wisely. I hope you now understand what love really is. It is not a feeling, love is a commitment.
