Recap of the Event
Last Sunday, the streets of Marigot came alive with cyclists, motorcyclists, and walkers for an engaging event focused on road safety. This event, which kicked off at 8:00am, was organized by the French authorities, the Catholic Church and the Caribbean Eagles. Participants set out on a 10-kilometer route, with stops along the way to learn vital safety practices. By noon, around 400 people had reached the finish line at the Galisbay parking lot, where camaraderie filled the air. After sharing their experiences, everyone enjoyed a well-stocked buffet to refuel and unwind. The event had a lively, friendly atmosphere, with participants wearing fluorescent “Ride for Life” T-shirts and helmets to promote safety.
The local Caribbean Eagles club, known for its community support, joined the event in full force, eager to back initiatives promoting wellbeing. Riders from all backgrounds – bicyclists and motorcyclists alike – were early to participate in the meaningful day. The annual event continues to grow, attracting riders from around the world. Despite stereotypes about American motorcyclists, these participants demonstrated exemplary road safety, often following the rules more carefully than some local riders, who are sometimes less mindful of regulations. The main goal of the second edition of the “Your Road is My Road” campaign was to raise awareness, especially among young road users, and foster respect for all who share the road.
Evelyne Fleming, one of the co-organizers, expressed her joy at the large turnout. Despite the heat, the community showed up in full force, with educational workshops along the route bustling with attendees eager to learn. It was clear that the message of road safety resonated deeply with the public.
Several local organizations, including AMAN, SXM Moto Addict, Bip Bip Coyote, and the National Gendarmerie, supported the event, partnering with local bikers and cyclists to promote safer roads for everyone. A new partnership with the parish priest of Saint-Martin de Tours added a meaningful religious element to the event, tying his “Ride for Life” initiative (now in its third year) with the “Your Road is My Road” campaign. The priest humorously pointed out that some attendees couldn’t wait for his blessing before heading toward the tempting barbecue aromas.
As participants gathered around the feast, some said a prayer before eating, while others recited the more fitting motorcyclist prayer: “Lord, take your place with us on our motorcycles. May your protective spirit be present during our ride and inspire tolerance, patience, and courtesy around us. Instil in us caution, and protect us during our journeys. Amen.”
The event was a resounding success, uniting the community for a day of learning, laughter, and a shared commitment to road safety. For other upcoming rides such as this, reach out to Jane at The Caribbean Eagles via WhatsApp +1 (721) 520-7015.
