What is a think tank? What does it do?: Introducing a new series by the Think To DO Institute

A think tank is a research institute that performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology and culture. Think tanks publish articles, studies, or even draft legislation on particular matters of policy or society. This information is then used by governments, businesses, media organizations, social movements or other interest groups.

The Think To DO Institute is an independent, apolitical think tank in Curaçao, with the aim of helping Curaçao as a society to become more resilient. The institute does this by researching “best practice” methods that offer practical solutions to remove obstacles that hinder our resilience. In 2024, the institution expanded its work to include Aruba and St. Maarten.

The Think To DO Institute has been in existence for five years now and has completed extensive research in specific areas of resilience – resilience of people, resilience of the place, resilience of knowledge and resilience of leadership. The institute looks at research from other countries in the world and compares to the findings about the local society. It conducts important large-scale surveys and looks for important documentation international and locally before publishing its findings on these important topics. Its major publications are then published on its website and forwarded to targeting organizations.

Currently, Think To DO Institute publishes weekly columns in Dutch and Papiamentu in Curaçao in the AMIGOE and EXTRA newspapers. Recently, it was decided to launch a column in The Daily Herald in English.

What will this column be about?

This column is focused on the findings of multi-year in depth research about resilience of the society called the Fragile States Index(FSI), Trust and Social Cohesion Research and Mindset research. The FSI research is based on the international research by the same name which is conducted in 170 countries in the world.

The Think To DO Institute compares Curaçao’s country resilience and other western Caribbean islands to that of other countries to see how fragile or resilient we are and how we can become more resilient. Various surveys collect data about trust and social cohesion (the sense of belonging that people have) and mindset (to what extent people believe they can create their own future).

For trust and a sense of belonging to be strengthened, it is important that researchers and media fulfil their role to inform the people of the possible impact the research could have on their lives. Informed citizens strengthen governments.

It is hoped that this column can contribute to the capacity of citizens to contribute to their society by being knowledgeable.

With this column, the Think To DO Institute publishes short pieces related to the facts and results of its research reports, so that readers can learn more about the vulnerability of their country.
