The recently established RISE Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting vulnerable individuals and communities through purposeful action, meaningful partnerships and long-term impact.
With more than 30 years of combined experience in the non-profit and community development sectors, the leaders of RISE Foundation have a shared passion for helping the people of Sint Maarten reach their full potential. The board of RISE Foundation comprises four members, who are also the co-founders of the organization: the President, Chiaira Bowers; the Vice President, Josiah Lamothe; the Treasurer, Priya Misir; and the Secretary, Kevin James.
Considering the challenges that the community faced due to Hurricane Irma and the COVID-19 pandemic, it was evident that there was a need for additional support, especially for individuals and families that were struggling the most. RISE Foundation envisions a community where disadvantaged individuals in Sint Maarten are embraced and supported through every challenge they face and aims to build a united and resilient society.
Here's a word from President Bowers:
“The reason I’m inspired – and deeply passionate – about the work we’re doing is because, over the years of working within our community, I’ve seen first-hand the gaps; the lack of access to essential services, the challenges families face, and the limited support available to those who need it most. RISE Foundation was created to help fill those gaps. When we empower just one person, we create the potential for them to uplift someone else. That’s how we begin to build stronger communities – one person at a time.”
The Vice President Lamothe expressed the importance of unity in his statement:
“Growing up in St. Maarten, I saw how my community shaped me. That’s why I believe we all have a responsibility to step up, not sit back and wait. Change doesn’t happen alone – it takes all of us working together to build a better island.”
Treasurer Misir shared about her love for foster children when she said:
“I’m passionate about working with foster kids – fostering hope, creating opportunities, and offering support where it’s needed most. I believe every child deserves a chance to rise, and I’m committed to being part of that journey.”
James, the Secretary, offered the following about his motivation:
“I truly believe that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and that if we help those who are disadvantaged, we can create a more prosperous community for all of us. I’ve been involved in community service since I was a teenager, and it’s always brought me so much joy. I’m really excited to embark on this journey with my colleagues and friends so that we can do our part to elevate our people, and help St. Maarten reach its full potential, together.”
