The Foundation SMaatn National Cultural Parade (SMNCP) celebrates its 10th anniversary by way of the Let’s Act project! SMNCP has been honouring the island’s heritage for many years through the cultural parade, and is continuing to do so this year in a new and meaningful way with its latest project that falls under the Let’s Act program. This initiative celebrates creativity, community, and the vibrant spirit of Sint Maarten’s elders by bringing seniors together through the creation of cultural wear and parade decorations.
At the heart of SMNCP’s project is a series of hands-on workshops that teach seniors how to sew traditional clothing, and create parade decorations inspired by Sint Maarten’s culture and heritage. These workshops not only offer an opportunity for participants to learn, revive or express their creative skills but also provide a space for social connection and intergenerational exchange. The seniors’ creations will be proudly showcased during the cultural parade held annually on November 11, as well as in three additional cultural events throughout the year.
Also participating in the project launched by SMNCP are two senior-focused organizations: Home Away from Home and the St. Maarten Senior Citizens Recreational Foundation. Both organizations share the mission to enrich the lives of seniors through creativity and social engagement.
Beyond preparing for the parade, this project strengthens community bonds and promotes wellbeing among its participants. In a spirit of intergenerational learning, students from the Sundial School have also expressed interest in learning how to sew alongside participating seniors. Joining forces with the school’s sewing classes provides a pathway for young people to collaborate and connect with elders through tradition and artistry. The resulting costumes will continue to be used in future parades and exhibitions, extending the project’s impact and reach.
The Let’s ACT Program, funded by the Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie (FCP), is a collaborative initiative of CEDE Aruba, the St. Maarten Development Fund (SMDF), and Foresee Foundation (4CF). The program is designed to expand public access to the arts, support local creatives, and build a sustainable cultural and artistic infrastructure in St. Maarten and Aruba. Let’s ACT, which began in April, will continue running through September 2026, empowering local artists and cultural organizations through funding, training, mentorship and community engagement.
This initiative creates opportunities for all generations to witness Sint Maarten’s cultural richness in action through art, celebration and joy.
